Richard Rawling and Gas Monkey Garage – introduction
I announced the interview with Richard Rawlings from Gas Monkey on my blog at the end of January. In the end, we managed to talk to Richard, who explained a bit about his life and work on a daily basis and behind the cameras.
Richard Rawlings lives in the American city of Forth Worth, Texas. He followed in his father’s footsteps and became interested in automotive as a little boy. Together with his father, he visited various auctions and motor shows. One of the first photos of Richard shows him sitting in a small replica of a Volkswagen Beetle, pedaling. Richard comes from a poor family and worked three jobs to buy a more expensive toy for his child.
Richard bought his first car at the age of 14. It was the 1974 Mercury Comet. – It was a great car, even though all my friends laughed at me because of it. It was green, comfortable, didn’t burn much fuel, it drove well and there was a V6 under the hood. This car is not one of the most beautiful in the world, but you could get a lot for a small amount, says Richard Rawlings.
In high school, he rode the legendary 1977 “Bandit” Trans Am Pontiac. In the same year, the famous movie “Master of the steering wheel runs away”, starring Burt Reynolds and just such a car, appeared in theaters.
