The Navitel ALC 01 is an electrochemical breathalyzer available in two versions: 01 with a black casing and 02 in green, reminiscent of the Navitel logo. This breathalyzer can be purchased for as low as ~70 EUR. How does it perform in practice, and is it worth buying? This will be discussed in today’s review. The breathalyzer for this review was provided by the manufacturer.
First Impressions
The Navitel ALC 01 is not the first breathalyzer I have had the opportunity to test. Each of these tests is always an interesting experience. The Navitel breathalyzer arrives calibrated and ready for use. The set includes five spare mouthpieces, two AA batteries, and a hard protective case. Each such device requires periodic calibration in a specialized service center, and unfortunately, many people neglect this. Why is calibration necessary? It is essential to ensure the electrochemical sensor always shows the correct value. Navitel has also thought about this by including a voucher for a free calibration within 12 months of purchase.
Sensor in the Breathalyzer
The Navitel ALC 01 BLACK uses an electrochemical sensor manufactured in the United Kingdom. Sensors of this type are considered among the most accurate on the market, providing users with precise measurement results. Compared to cheaper semiconductor sensors, electrochemical sensors offer better stability and less susceptibility to interference. How does such a sensor work?
A breathalyzer equipped with an electrochemical sensor operates on the principle of alcohol oxidation on the electrode’s surface, resulting in the generation of an electric current proportional to the alcohol concentration in the exhaled air. The user blows into the mouthpiece, and the air containing alcohol vapors passes through the electrochemical sensor, where the alcohol (ethanol) is oxidized on the platinum electrode surface in the presence of a catalyst. This reaction produces hydrogen ions and electrons, which flow through an external circuit, generating an electric current. The magnitude of the generated current is directly proportional to the amount of oxidized ethanol and thus to the alcohol concentration in the exhaled air. The breathalyzer’s electronic system measures the current, converts it to alcohol concentration, and displays the result on the device’s screen. Thanks to the high precision and selectivity of electrochemical sensors, such breathalyzers can accurately measure alcohol concentration even in the presence of other substances in the air, making them indispensable in both professional police devices and models for personal use.
Compact Dimensions and Ease of Use
The breathalyzer is equipped with a clear digital display that shows the measurement results. The measurement range is from 0.00 to 4.00‰, with an accuracy of 0.01‰. The display backlight allows the device to be used even in low light conditions, which is particularly useful at night or in dark rooms. The Navitel ALC 01 BLACK is exceptionally compact, measuring 118 x 54 x 20 mm and weighing only 73 grams. It is much smaller and lighter than an average smartphone. This makes it easy to carry and conveniently store in a pocket, handbag, or car glove compartment. The set also includes a case that facilitates transport and protects the device from damage. What I like and simultaneously find annoying is the stiffness of the case. It provides excellent protection against damage and is very sturdy. However, the internal walls are additionally divided by a mesh with an elastic band at about 3/4 height. This means that even when sober, it is challenging to remove the breathalyzer from the case. You can’t slightly bend the case because it is rigid.
Navitel ALC 01 in Practice
The breathalyzer is powered by two alkaline AA batteries, which come with the device. Taking a measurement is extremely simple and intuitive. After holding down the power button, the promile symbol appears on the display. The next press lights up the mouthpiece in blue, and the screen changes the text to ‘blow’. You need to blow into the mouthpiece for just a few seconds until you hear the measurement completion sound. After a moment, the result will be displayed. After less than a minute, the device automatically turns off to save battery.
Calibration
To perform calibration, you need to send the device to a specialized company that handles this. It is worth doing at least once a year. Over time and with regular use, the electrochemical sensor can become contaminated and its sensitivity can change, affecting reading accuracy. The calibration process involves adjusting and resetting the sensor to standard values, eliminating errors resulting from its wear and environmental conditions.
Regular calibration also allows for detecting potential sensor malfunctions that could affect its performance. This way, the user can be sure that the breathalyzer provides reliable results, which is especially important in situations requiring precise measurements, such as police checks or employee testing.
Without regular calibration, breathalyzer readings can be incorrect, leading to erroneous conclusions about blood alcohol levels. Therefore, regular calibration is essential for maintaining the device’s accuracy and reliability. As mentioned at the beginning, the device set includes a voucher for a free calibration, which can be performed within 12 months from the purchase date.
